Episode 35 – Leadership, Management, and the Abuse Crisis – The Art of Living Well Podcast
I understand your point about accountability within the priesthood, and the need for a stronger management, I’m simply not sure how effective such a program will be in dealing with this issue of abuse. Do priest confess such actions? If they receive absolution, what happens? There are too few priests as it is, and I could see a Bishop wanting to keep the priests he has. Your solution is based more an a business model of management and accountability. Under such a program would people lose their jobs if they confessed to a mortal sin such as homosexuality? This entire thing is a sticky wicket.
Older Catholics see priest differently than converts, like myself, and younger people. The Pope is fallible and so are priests. When I first entered the Church, my wife and I were recruited to do Catholic Engaged Encounter, which we did for about eight years. The priest on the first weekend we did On the first weekend related how he handled a parishioner who had caused him some type of problem. He said something like, “And I told him I’d fix it so he wouldn’t even be able to make the sign of the cross in the parish.” I believe priest have authority to forgive sin by their ordination, but it is unfortunate for everyone when a priest condemns people.
In the diocese I was confirmed in there were a good many priest who were very effeminate. Some were actually caught soliciting. This brings me to the question, “Can a priest forgive sin if he, himself is in a state of mortal sin?”
Any management program followed is still subject to human wisdom, human personality traits and faults. I’ve worked for the Germans, the Japanese, the French and the Americans. I’m retired now, and I can testify that if it’s human, it’ll have problems. Heck, we’re talking about the Church made up of supposedly sanctified humans and we still have moral problems. I’ll be interested to see what else you come up with.
