Obligation is not a bad word. It is a good word because the obligations we embrace are the direction we guide our passions, and thus our love. The emotion of love must be oriented towards that which is good and noble and we direct our emotions by yoking them to the highest good, namely God. The man who binds himself to God and then his other obligations is man who teaches his emotions to love what is good and hate what is evil.
