To approach God…

The contemplation of the divine essence is not achieved by the imagination, the reason, or any natural mode of understanding. While the lower faculties must be brought into the gentle rule of sound doctrine and the lower faculties fed on spiritual food to prepare for this contemplation, nonetheless, it is not by our nature that we see God within. It is properly speaking, the work of grace.

Our part is to keep the mirror of the heart pure from vain pursuits, the stain of mortal sin, and the pull of earthly desires. We must learn to set our gaze on things eternal and lift our mind to the life that comes, and then God will grant us access into the inner mansions in the manner and at the time he chooses.
